Alma

Alma 1

Priestcraft is and priestcraft was

Perversion of his way

Seeking popularity

Authority and pay

Why do we preach the word of God?

For money or for power?

Do we think it truly odd

Our service by the hour?

Many love the vanity

Comfort in a lie

Circumvent God’s humble word

Rejecting it they die

Humility and patient hope

Immovable in faith

Imparting to the poor and sick

Qualify the Saints

Alma 2

Seeking Kingship and for power

Wonderful contention rose

Those for freedom won the day

In other hearts, the hatred grows

A bitter loss, fuels bitter acts

And a civil war ensues

Brother, fighting brother now

In darkened combats hues

The Lord and mercy stretches out

And rescues those who call his name

But much is lost and precious life

For one man’s selfish power game

Alma 3

As we curse God we curse ourselves

With marks that separate

From his fold and from his church

And from his warm embrace

We decorate a stony wall

And build it round our hearts

To keep the holy whisperings out

Retard the healers art

We shade our minds with darkened thoughts

To block out rays of sun

Keep it fixed on selfish ways

Distracted with some fun

We change our clothes and pierce our nose

And shed our garments, holy

For a look that fits the world

Reflecting inward follie

Black or white or bond or free

Tattooed or pierced or not

When we choose God, he cleanses us

Makes whole and without spot

Alma 4

Torn with their afflictions, soul and mind

Judgements of a just God, wrath inclined

Awakened to their duty and their plight

Repentant and baptized to cleanse the blight

Waxing proud in riches and fine silk

Prosperity, they turn like sour milk

Spoiled in the sun filled days of peace

Reeking as their wickedness increased

So much iniquity spread wide

Lifting themselves up in wanton pride

Turning stiffened back upon the needy

Naked and the hungry for the greedy

Abased and in Christ‘s name were others, few

Succoring the poor and needy, true

To their covenant and filled with love

And faith are sealed to their God above

Alma 5

He changed their hearts and woke their souls from sleep

Illuminated by the word they keep

Faithful in the midst of death and hell

Clinging to a prophet’s voice, there dwell

Spiritually been born of God, have ye?

Received his image. In you will Him I see?

Exercising faith in his redemption

Looking forward to the resurrection

If you’d had a mighty change of heart

And with redemptions song have sung your part

Does this song still guide your daily steps?

With ears that hear, the will of God accept?

The Shepherd, good, doth call now after you

Will you hearken to his voice and choose

To come out from the wicked world around

And with the Saints, rejoice in song and sound

Alma 6

Haiku

The Word of God shared

Liberal to all who would hear

Order in the church

Alma 7

I found you humble before God

And pleading for his grace

Blessed be the name of God

Receive my warm embrace

The time is not for distant now

When Christ shall walk the earth

Bourne of Mary, virgin, fair

Miraculous his birth

Surely he will bear our grief

In death, our pain and sin

That he may lose the bands of death

And succour from within

Repent and lay aside your sin

Make covenants that hold fast

Have faith and hope and charity

Through Christ, life ever last

Alma 8

A wicked and a sinful generation

Heading for perpetual damnation

A loving God, by angels firm decree

Calls to messengers to set them free

Strengthening each other, flesh and soul

Bread and meat were shared to make them whole

Their friendship, midst the trials, gave them strength

These missionaries bond endures the length

They’re charged to say, repent ye saith the Lord

If ye do not, hangs justices two edged sword

Alma 9

Preach again unto this wicked people

Teach, for they are seeking after evil

Forgiven are traditions of your fathers

Begotten son of God to you, a brother

Our father‘s words were clear, for us to prosper

Power in Commandments, faith we foster

But turn from him and harden know your heart

Be cut off from his presence, be apart

Remember all the blessings you’ve received

Tender are his mercies when we cleave

Terrible and Great will be his wrath

Unbearable if we walk Satan‘s path

Repent now, for his kingdom is at hand

He sent to to be the way, that that we may stand

Alma 10

Amulek

A second witness bourn to deafened ears

Astonished at his words with swirling fears

Lawyers who were cutting sought to cross

The missionaries simple truth made dross

The wisdom of the Lord is more than man

He perceived their thoughts and said to them

Ye wicked and perverse, ye hypocrites

Perverting righteous ways with lying lips

A righteous few who live with your walls

In faithful prayer preserve you from a fall

If ye will cast them out and not repent

Destruction waits for you, God’s patience spent

In anger, you may meet my pointed words

I testify not in my name, the Lord’s

 Alma 11

I say to you, he cannot save

When you persist in sin

No unclean thing can dwell with God

No rebellious soul can win

But our Great God will come to earth

His people to redeem

Take upon himself your sin

Repentance in his name

The young and old, the bond and free

From temporal death are saved

To die no more and stand before

Their God. Through Christ be raised

Alma 12

A knowledge of God is given to mankind

His mysteries and truths for All to find

The portion of his words which he doth give

According to our heed and how we live

Buy our words and thoughts and works be judged

By our Jesus, who has ever loved

He’s merciful to those that do believe

His mercy through repentance is received

His plan, set out, to save from death and sin

Salvations way, for all to be as kin

Eve and Adam, chose in fruits embrace

Redemption in Christ power and his grace

Harden not your hearts and turn away

See God’s supreme goodness every day

Alma 13

High priests of God, according to their faith

Repented and were righteous in their days

Called from the foundation of the world

To carry for the gospels truth unfurled

Ordinances given through this power

To clearly see the son of God this hour

The time is now, be humble and repent

Present yourselves to God with heart now rent

Watch and pray each day that ye may bear

Temptations and the adversaries snare

Be spirit lead, be patient, full of love

Submissive, meek, to join him up above

Have faith, have hope, receive eternal life

Rest in the love of God. Be free of strife

Alma 14

A wicked scene plays out before our eyes

As hardened men in hateful fury rise

And cast the pure in heart t’ward pain and death

Malevolence the thief of life and breath

How can we witness, God, this awful scene?

In thy name and power, let us redeem

Why, O God, do you constrain my hand?

I’m shattered, irreparable I stand

With broken heart and spirit crushed I come

Exercising faith in thee alone

I’ll trust and wait in agony of pain

Thou can’st redeem the broken and the slain

The Son of Man descends below all things

To lift us up with healing in his wings

Alma 15

Ministering unto the sick

Unto the broken heart

Building faith in Jesus Christ

Perform the healers art

Bereft of friends, rejected

Invite into your home

Strengthen them in time of need

A welcoming shalom

Alma 16

Every living soul destroyed

In Ammonihah

In one day it was desolate

Carcasses to rot

Dead bodies heaped upon the dirt

A shallow earthen grave

Desolation of Nehors

Profession of the slain

Echoing through empty lands

Are Alma’s final words

In wickedness ye shall find death

And harvest it’s rewards

Alma 17

Royal sons reject the throne

And seek the Fathers will

Preach and serve the fallen ones

A mission to fulfil

They searched the scriptures, fasted much

And prayed with all their heart

Patient in afflictions, trials

To wisdom’s truth impart

Serving with the humble sheep

God‘s power was displayed

Faithful and obedient

Hardened hearts or swayed

Alma 18

I’ve seen a sign and wondered in my heart

By what power this miracle can be

For now, my ears can hear my eyes can see

The glory and the light you do impart

In thy words alone, I do believe

Fill my open heart with spirits light

Teach me of his plan, salvation’s might

Great and marvellous, thy words receive

Oh Lord, have mercy on this broken soul

Abundant is thy mercy and thy grace

I’ll give away all things to see thy face

Give up my sins, in thy forgiveness whole

Overcome, I sink now to my knees

With everything in me I ask this, please

Alma 19

Believest thou in my words alone?

And the woman of faith says yes

Blessed art thou because of thy faith

Thy hope in God expressed

A woman of faith with a vision from God

Converted unto the Lord

Amidst unbelievers she gathered them up

To witness his powerful word

These women of faith, in tears and joy

Their blessed Jesus confess

Redeemed by his power from an awful hell

Their peoples needs redress

Alma 20

The hatred deep, within his heart it throbbed

Handed down by fathers who felt robbed

Surprised now as his son is with their kin

A conflict with his son and from within

Loyalty to family, old and new

Tradition, deep, obscured his proper view

In anger, he lashed out and lost his way

In love, the sword of justice did not slay

Astonished at the love shown for his son

Rejoicing for his life, belief begun

Desirous, just as his son, to learn

The light of faith within his heart did burn

Traditions, loyalty, and family need

Give way to God, His love for all his seed

 Alma 21

Strengthened by a calling from on high

Wading through affliction, pain defy

Waiting with a hope of things to be

Preaching in the synagogues once free

And after much affliction, some success

Many brought to know and to confess

And witness of the error of their ways

Find Hope in Christ, repent of yesterdays

Alma 22

I’m troubled by the generosity

And greatness of thy brothers words to me

Please minister to me, I must insist

Be not my servant, but be my guide in this

Thou taught of God and of his precious plan

Creation, fall, redemption, Son of Man

I bow in humble pleading to repent

Of wickedness and darkened days now spent

Redeemed, renewed, awakened. Now rejoice!

Administer to others, heart and voice

Proclaim the gospel wide across the land

Many hear and in Christ’s glory stand

His power of deliverance is great

To save from sin, creating love from hate

Alma 23

Laying down their weapons of rebellion

Fighting not against their God or man

Believing in the preaching and the plan

Steadfast, never fall away again

Thousands found the knowledge of the Lord

Old traditions gone to walk His ways

Serving God and man in all their days

Never lifting up another sword

Friendly with their brothers, all as one

Industrious this people, evermore

Correspondence with an open door

A Zion’s people story has begun

Distinguishing themselves in faith and name

Reflecting ancient fathers, ways reclaim

Alma 24

Sins and murders stained our swords, our souls

We thank our God, his Word, saved us alone

Of all mankind, most lost and fallen ones

But through repentance cleansed, become His sons

Our brothers hatred grows exceeding sore

They gather sword, prepare, and come to war

But we will not, we bury swords for peace

A witness of our sure and firm belief

We kneel in prayer, in hatred they give death

Swords fall on us, we take our final breath

But in the very act, we praise our God

In our hands, held fast, the iron rod

Their hearts are broken, softened now in pain

Converted and redeemed, their souls are gained

Alma 25

I heard the missionaries word

But chose another way

Went about my worldly life

My faithful walk delay

I’ve learned by sad experience

By sin, it’s harvest sore

The only way to peace and joy

Is through the Saviour’s door

I’ll bury my rebellion

I’ll keep God’s holy law

Strength faith in Jesus Christ

From him, my hope I’ll draw

Alma 26

Blessed be the name of God

Rejoice and sing his praise

From dark abyss to heavenly light

Thousands, find his ways

With field ripe and sickle sharp

We laboured all day long

Did reap, and now the sheaves are in

Protected from the storm

I do not boast in my own strength

Nor in my wisdom, dim

But I will boast in my Great God

Can do all things in him

Thousands loosed from pains of hell

Sing out, redeeming love

And praise his name forever more

His mercy from above

Alma 27

The Anti-Nephi-Lehi’s sought God’s will

Still firm, they were determined not to kill

Suffer death, inflicted by their kin

Rather that, than lift the sword and sin

To the Nephites Ammon plead their case

Seeking for their mercy and their grace

Protection from their enemies advance

Jershon granted, their inheritance

Ammons people, numbered in the fold

Distinguished for their zeal toward God

Perfect, honest, upright in all things

Firm, their faith in Jesus Christ the king

Thus, they were a people loved and zealous

A highly favoured people, to God precious

Alma 28

Such a battle never had been known

Tens of thousands slain to meet their end

Slaughter of both enemy and a friend

Sorrow for the death that had been sewn

Mourning, yes but also full of joy

Hope within the promise of the Lord

That they are raised according to His word

And never ending happiness enjoy

And thus we see the inequality

Of man, because of sin and of transgression

The power of the devil, is oppression

In contrast to celestial sovereignty

Sorrow for the death in sin and strife

Joy because the light of Christ in life

Alma 29

Oh that I had an angel’s voice

And with that trump sing out

Declaring onto every soul

Repent! My thunderous shout

But I ought to be content with things

The Lord has given me

With his plan to save, redeem

His sure and firm decree

I will glory in the Lord

Rejoice as souls repent

I witness of the faith and joy

In the truly penitent

Alma 30

Korihor, the antichrist, is teaching

That there shall be no Christ and no man know

Of things to come, a vain and foolish hope

In their tradition yoked, a fruitless reaping

In swollen words to Alma he rose up

Reviling against priest and them accuse

Of glutting off the people, crooked views

But in light and faith Alma stood up

He testified of Christ, the prophets showed

All things on earth denote there is a God

Will he deny my witness, calling fraud?

Or yield to the spirits truth bestowed

A sign you want? Then thou shall be struck dumb

No more to lead away men’s hearts far from

 Alma 31

Lifted up in pride upon the tower

Offering a prayer, a vain ascent

Toward their brother’s ears, the true intent

A godless, selfish, isolated hour

Just like the tower, their hearts were lifted up

A humble prophet falls up upon his knees

Seeking for the strength to preach to these

From a God who drank this bitter cup

Oh Lord, grant us strength in our afflictions

Comfort now our souls in Jesus Christ

That we may have success, declaring right

Convince them of their wicked, lost convictions

The spirit poured upon them at this time

Filling each with hope and strength divine

Alma 32

Planted in the fertile ground: humility

God’s word, the seed, can grow with great facility

When nurtured with a particle of faith

A desire to believe in what God saith

Behold it  sprouts and swells, begins to grow

Manifests the truth, you start to know

That the seed is good and fills your breast

Enlightening your mind, your soul at rest

Is this not real? The light you know discern

Witness to the heart and mind, you learn

If, with patient diligence, you nourish

The tree with precious fruit, will ever flourish

For in your soul, a deep abiding root

Now plant, and know this pure and precious fruit

Alma 33

Thou dids't hear me when I prayed in the wilderness

Thou dids't hear me when I cried in the field

Thou dids’t see me when I knelt in my closet

Thou dids't love me and thy mercy I did feel

Thou dids't hear us in our pleading desperation

Being cast out and despised of enemy

Thou dids't minister unto thy congregation

As they prayed to thee in fervent unity

Thou dids't hear me amidst my affliction

The sincerity thou witnessed in my heart

Thou dids't save me, and thy Son the Holy ransom

Thou dids’t  judge me in His mercy from the start

Thou dids't hear Him as he prayed in the garden

Thou dids’t hear Him as cried in agony

Thou dids't see Him as He bled on the cruel cross

He did glorify Thy name in saving me

Alma 34

The law of old that Moses gave

Is meant to point the way

To that final sacrifice

The Son of God will pay

To bring about the mercy, grace

And overpower justice

Through our repentance and our faith

Delivered through our Jesus

This life right now, is time for man

To prepare to meet their God

And not procrastinate the day

To hold the iron rod

Watch and pray continually

Work out your own salvation

By calling on the name of Christ

In every situation

Alma 35

A prophet, seer, and father dear

Mourns their wickedness

Hardened hearts that take offence

Unwilling to confess

Grieving for iniquity

For bloodshed and for war

For contention in the heart

And appetite for more

With world around in wickedness

His focus on the home

To teach his children righteousness

And that they’re not alone

Alma 36

Tortured with the pains of hell

Remorse, for I rebelled

Against my God, against His law

A broken family weld

Oh, that I could be extinct

Both soul and body hid

From the presence of my God

Who sees all that I did

For days and nights t’was wracked with pain

A damned souls sad lament

I thought my soul forever lost

God’s sore but just torment

But from the dark, a spark, a light

A faithful father’s word

Of Jesus Christ, a Son of God

My mind caught hold and heard

I cried within my heart, Oh please!

Oh Jesus, Son of God

Have mercy on my wretched soul

Brought low with justice rod

And now, behold, when I thought this

My pains were gone: no more

And oh what joy and light were mine

Redeemed down to my core

Nothing so exquisite, sore

And bitter was my pain

Nothing so exquisite, sweet

As the joy my soul regained

Methought I saw the throne of God

And angels in His praise

My soul did long to be with Him

My voice in worship raise

In awe I stand before His throne

His mercy on display

For saving someone lost as me

And with Him I will stay

Alma 37

A word so small, a single phrase

A record of the past

The word of God as handed down

From fathers, wisdom passed

Ye may suppose it foolishness

These small and simple things

They bring about God’s grand design

Protect from Satan’s slings

Respect the words and they’ll stay bright

Enlarge your memory

Confound the wisdom of the wise

And revelations key

Who knoweth what they’ll do for you?

With power, fill your heart

Make light the darkened path ahead

And heavens truth impart

Alma 38

My diligent and faithful son

I’m proud, but listen still

Use boldness, but don’t overbear

Be humble to God’s will

Just like a mountain, firm and deep

Be steady in thy faith

In love, reach out and serve the poor

Hold up his light always

Alma 39

Correction that is sharp and filled with love

From a father to a wayward son

Thy pride and boasting lifted thee above

Like David’s sin, thy righteousness undone

I dwell upon your crimes for your own good

Ye cannot hide your sin, God seeth all

Others would not listen as they should

For your offensive conduct, they did fall

Repent my son, forsake your lustful eyes

Cross yourself, and from your brothers learn

With all your strength and might and mind arise

Thy vanity will only sorrow earn

Please turn your mind to Christ and his salvation

Remember him, find lasting true relation

Alma 40

Life‘s journey here on earth ends not with death

A time before our resurrections breath

We’re taken home to God, who gave us life

The spirit of mankind now free from strife

The righteous are in happiness and peace

The wicked are imprisoned, sin the thief

Both awaiting resurrections gift

Christ’s power to restore and end the rift

The soul shall be restored to body, whole

Each limb and joint perform its proper role

Ev’n a hair of the head shall not be lost

Perfected state, his sacrifice the cost

The righteous shall shine forth, the kingdom bright

Complete. Fulfil celestial birthright

 Alma 41

Wickedness never was happiness

Wickedness ever was pain

Bitter the bonds of iniquity

Bitter the cries of the slain

Carnal the state of our nature

Carnal and selfish are we

Empty the worldly oblations

Empty our hearts if we seek

Repent of your sins and offences

Repent and long for his care

Redeemed by his holy offering

Redeemed as our natures repaired

Be merciful onto your brethren

He’ll be merciful unto you

For what you sent out will return again

Restored, redeemed, renewed

Alma 42

All mankind are fallen, dead

By justice grasp are held

Consigned, by law, to be cut off

God’s presence now withheld

For Adam did partake the fruit

Like God, he came to see

Introducing death and sin

For him, for you, for me

God’s plan of mercy is set forth

Atonement should be made

By God himself for all our sins

His life and blood are paid

Jesus’ mercy can be found

As we repent and pray

The truly penitent are saved

Be brought through night to day

Whosoever will come, may come

Partake salvation, free

Find life and hope within his love

Rejoice on bended knee

Alma 43

Sidon’s waters red with blood

Of enemy and friend

A victory found at such great cost

Here many lives did end

The Lord has said, ye shall defend

Your families and your home

With faith in God and armour strong

Face death, the great unknown

Sword and arrow, shield and sweat

A prayer deep in our heart

We fight with all our might and mind

Wield death, the awful art

But glory in the victory

Is muted, filled with sorrow

Lamenting all our fallen kin

For scars beyond tomorrow

Alma 44

Hiaku

Covenant of peace

Rejected for stubborn pride

The river flows red

Alma 45

To every nation, kindred, tongue

Cursed shall be the land

When you follow wickedness

And raise a vengeful hand

Delivered from your enemies

In righteousness you’re spared

Give thanks to God in fasting prayer

Rejoice and be prepared

The promises upon this land

Still hold for you and I

Protected and delivered if

On God we will rely

Alma 46

Evil rising as the tide

Is seeking out for power

Overthrowing laws and God

To make the people cower

With cunning words of sophistry

It’s tongue of flattery

Evil leads our hearts away

Destroys our liberty

Rising from the swirling tide

Of evil and of hate

A lighthouse, sure and firm and true

A welcome respite space

A flag, from top of the lighthouse, high

Though ripped and torn by wind

Displays the words of liberty

Where happiness we find

In memory of our mighty God

And memory of our kin

Our peace, our freedom and our faith

For those the battle win

Alma 47 - Poison

Poison

Slow and subtle

Ingested, yet unrecognized

Disguised its lies as virtue

Now the bowels are full

Taking hold from the core

The beating heart, betrayed, turns weak

The arm, with sword in hand, goes limp

The head, once high, bowed low in agony

This toxin, governing the whole

Bent to its will, this broken body

To its purpose from the start

Death

Alma 48

God prepares this people, now

Against the coming storms

Erecting forts, a safe resort

As growing danger swarms

God prepared a man of might

With great humility

With perfect understanding and

A joy of liberty

A leader, if all men were like

The very powers of hell

Would shake forever, powerless

The devil’s purpose fell

Rejoicing not in coming war

Reluctant, takes up arms

Defending faith and family

Trusting in God’s charge

Alma 49

Fortify the nation against evil

Fortify the city round about

Fortify the synagogues and churches

Fortify to keep the darkness out

The enemy is ever ready, waiting

A host so vast, ye cannot count them all

Safety in the walls, found in your staying

Behind the bulwarks firm, protective wall

Though numberless, their stones are ineffectual

Their arrows, sharp and piercing, miss the mark

Their anger, turned confusion as they fall

Their blood on fresh turned soil, now stained dark

We thank the Lord our God on bended knees

Delivered from the hands of enemies

Alma 50

Why, when the enemy is near

A vicious host that should strike fear

Preparing and soon bearing down

Found midst our people, not a frown?

There never was a happier time

Rejoicing in God’s word, sublime

With truth before our eyes, we see

His promised found, prosperity:

Peace amidst the swirling storm

Prayer to God in every home

Riches, yes, but of the sort

That rust and moth can never thwart

We found our God and we are his

And he is good with love that is

Forever, lifting up our soul

At home with him, our joy is full

 Alma 51

Teancum, man of action, man of war

Fought for freedoms cause, though battle sore

Exceeding enemy in strength and skill

Fear in hearts of foes his men instil

Repulsing and harassing them by day

At night stole forth, their king he sought to slay

A wicked man who poisoned all he touched

His heart and hands ‘round evil firmly clutched

Teancum found him sleeping in his bed

Javelin to heart, the king is dead

A quiet death, his servants did not stir

He snuck away and woke his man for war

And thus the end came to this wicked man

But evil still rolled onward with its plan

Alma 52

Inspired and enlightened of the Lord

The army of Teancum went in part

To lead away the enemy, set apart

From the city walls; protected, shored

A wearied march led to an army, fresh

Lehi was near Bountiful prepared

And came against the enemy, ensnared

Surrounded, now their wicked works are threshed

Determined, and with fury, they did fight

Desperate to get back to city walls

By Lehi and Moroni’s sword they fall

Yield themselves, now prisoners held tight

Their numbers did exceed the lost and slain

To Bountiful, they marched to be contained

Alma 53

Compassion for the suffering of their friends

Wanting to take arms to make amends

Compelled to honour covenant of peace

Desire to defend their friends, not cease

Their sons, all young, assembled to take arms

To fight for liberty, protect from harms

Willing to give life for freedom’s cause

Ahead with faith and confidence, no pause

Valiant for courage they did stand

Full of strength, they trusted in God’s hand

Men of truth and soberness were they

Walking upright, but not afraid to pray

Two thousand stripling soldiers take their place

To strengthen the whole army, saving grace

Alma 54

War is waged, a great divide

A wound is opened wide

Between the people of this land

Each forced to take a side

Anger burns in broken hearts

Fuelled by death and loss

Though justified, this anger scars

What’s left after the dross?

For what intent do we seek war

For glory or for power?

Defence of home and family?

Or righteousness devoured

Tread carefully when war must be

It’s costs are deep and grave

But in defence of all that’s good

Our lives we’ll give to save

Alma 55

The weapon used to win this war was wine

Potent and prepared in strength from vine

Disguised as spoils and taken as their own

The enemy made drunk, unconscious, prone

Supposed to guard the gate, now unsecure

The prisoners within weapons procure

And as the guards awake with morning rays

Surrendered or their death would surely face

Thus we see the Lord will make a way

Redeem his flock, his power on display

Alma 56

Two thousand sons, courageous, strong

Turned to face and fight

Behold, our God is with us yet

We’ll go forth in his might

They’d never fought, but feared not death

Their minds on liberty

“We do not doubt, our mother’s knew

Our faith in God, the key”

They fought as with the strength of God

Such mighty power shown

The enemy did yield up

As prisoners of war

To our great joy, we numbered those

Who fought within this band

And not one soul of them had died

Delivered by God’s hand

A miracle was wrought by faith

A mother’s faithful prayer

A loving God who strengthened us

A band of boys prepared

Alma 57

Behold my little band of men

Two thousand sixty strong

Were firm and fought most desperately

In battle did no wrong

They did obey, they did observe

Performing every word

Exactly as I gave command

Exactly as they heard

Two hundred of my stripling men

Had fainted, loss of blood

But we were all astonished as

We cleansed off dust and mud

Not one of them among my sons

Did perish from the sword

Though thousands lay around them dead

How powerful the Lord!

Alma 58

Behold, we’ve suffered many wounds

Of flesh and of the soul

Toiled in our weekend state

Hungry and alone

We know not why you’ve held back aid

Nor left us weakened here

But we will trust in God alone

To save us midst the fear

Like Job of old we live with faith

The Lord, we strictly heed

Stand fast in liberty, wherewith

Our God has made us free

Alma 59

The city lost and doubt is found

For people’s wicked ways

Will God preserve this wild branch?

Or burn what now decays?

The leaders and the captains feared

They marvelled at the scene

Anger at indifference shown

What could the suffering mean?

And in our lives when things get hard

The battle in our mind:

A punishment for sin or else

Just fallen earthly grind?

Alma 60

Suffering of the armies, worn and weak

Bleeding out their lives to fight, though bleak

Perishing for hunger and neglect

Rest in peace, in death with the elect

I do condemn your slothful sinful ways

In your protected cities, peaceful days

Neglecting to send men, to send supplies

Your egotistic hearts have cost our lives

Repent and aid us now or I’ll bring wrath

Upon your heads and turn your wicked path

I do not fear your power or your throne

I only fear my God, I’m not alone

I seek not power, but freedom, speaking bluntly

The glory of my God and of my country

 Alma 61

The greatness of a man is on display

When censured, does not anger or dismay

But glories in correction, seeking more

To learn and grow, be better than before

Leadership revealed in humility

Seeking not for power shows nobility

Freedom is the focus and desire

The aim is not terrestrial, but higher

Resisting evil with the spoken word

To turn the brother’s heart in anger stirred

But if the evil swelling tides compel

Resist with sword to stave off earthly hell

His soul stands fast in seeking liberty

In the which our God has made us free

Alma 62

There was murder, contention, iniquity, dissension

All matter of afflictions in the war

But because of the, righteous averted the crisis

By prayer and a merciful Lord

These trying conditions and awful positions

Had tested the heart of each man

Some had been hardened while others had pardoned

The wrongs, in humilities plan

A promise, a blessing for those now confessing

Their Jesus, his powerful arm

Finding prosperity with meekness and clarity

Safety, protection from harm

Not lifted in pride and with eyes open wide

Remember the Lord, who delivered

From prison and sin and death therein

Prayerfully thanking the Lord

Alma 63

Exceedingly curious

Adventure pulls northward

To an unknown land

A large ship built

Set forth

Prepared with provisions

Women and children

And hope

Returning again

More people

Set out once more

Never heard of more

Adventure or peril awaits

Lehi’s seed spread

Upon the isles of the sea
